Happy Birthday and thanks for the holiday your majesty!



This Queen's birthday weekend has been lovely, I have to say. It has involved no real plans aside from the Friday night Youth Event we hosted, which has been wonderful. Not that I don't like being busy, I thrive on it really, but it is nice every now and then to throw to-do lists and schedules out the window.


Mum and dad have been away with my youngest brother so it has just been a house-full of us kids. Us kids and Abigail...and granny and grandad who is really like one of the kids these days. So it has been a full house and a fun house and we still have a lovely day off tomorrow.


Just for fun, here's a bit of a look into the little, even simple moments that have made the weekend memorable so far...
Abby icing cupcakes and getting more icing on the plate and on herself than on the biscuits! She wasn;t bothered though, kept her busy for ages!



Watching Abby jump in puddles down at Long Bay beach, such a serene setting - and this is supposed to be Winter! Love it!

As a mother I have never shied away from big conversations. There are some things, given, that need to be repackaged for little hearts and minds to digest and absorb. Most things can be simplified. Race is one of those things. This week our news-feeds have been inundated with posts of unified outrage at the murder of an innocent man at the hands of the delegated authority who was meant to protect and serve him. Haunting videos footage of a suffocating man under the literal weight of racism and police brutality have impacted us all deeply. Make it count!

I'll share a secret with you... I have a parenting technique, call it a survival technique if you like, that I employ when times get tough. Yes, those times we don't post about on Facebook too often. The times when we left cooking dinner until the kids were grumpy. Those times where we had 3 pots and pans on the go with hungry ninja children trying to get their hands on food from the kitchen cupboards. And without a fail, at least one will be throwing a tantrum, maybe more. Maybe you're in the shop like I was the other day. Grocery shopping with your little army who at first are eager helpers. They follow your instructions, getting the fruit and veggies, carefully counting them out as you had instructed. Then, aisle by aisle, things turn to custard. First, the two year old insists on getting out of the trolley (HUGE mistake) and no amount of threats keeps him in on this particular day. People Power

I am currently sitting in the most amazing batch, on a cold Winter's day in Mangawhai. The fire is burning, making the intently focused faces of my three gorgeous kiddies glow as they watch the evening movie. I have been so sick for the last few days, peaking yesterday with a very unproductive day. My low point was sitting in tears in the car asking Gavin what time he planned on coming down knowing full well he had a work dinner that night... I had dragged myself out of bed , got the kids ready and took them for a walk and a scooter after breakfast thinking a coffee from the café may make all well with the world. As we reached the bottom of the road it started to pour. We headed back to base camp and swapped the scooters for the car. It took me ordering a coffee through streaming eyes, stuffy nose and throbbing head to realise that at only 9am, I still had a full day to entertain kids away from Auckland's array of luxury rainy-day activities.
